In December 2002, I was fortunate enough to spend a week on Althorpe Island, which lies in Investigator Strait between the bottom of Yorke Peninsula and Kangaroo Island. The trip was a working-bee with the "Friends of Althorpe Island Conservation Park". This is a short story of my experience, accompanied by my photographs. |
"I'm not sure... that wind is gusting." Mark our skipper scratched his chin as he looked out over the waters of Marion Bay. Our own gazes were met with whitecaps dotting the blue water. We could hardly argue... but we could make it hard for him to say no.
For four of us this was our first trip to Althorpe, and unless we could convince our skipper, Mark, to venture out in the boat, it was likely we would have to spend another night on the mainland. After all, it was a lovely December afternoon, and after 3 days of
waiting for calm weather, a force-8 gale wouldn't have dampened our enthusiasm. we were so close now, this had to be our first night on the island.
