Wilson's Promontory Lighthouse is perched on a small peninsula jutting
into the wild seas of Bass Strait. The granite light tower and
headkeeper's residence were built in 1859. Access is by walking only. The
lighthouse is 18kms (5-6 hrs walk) from Tidal River, which is 3 hours
drive from Melbourne. Walkers must book tours of the lighthouse at the
National Park Information Centre before leaving Tidal River. Two cottages
with eight and 12 bunk beds are available for individual or group
bookings. Tariff as at June 1998 - $25-30 per person per night; $155-195
per person per week. Meals are available if booked in advance.
