In 1859 a lighthouse was erected on the beach at Lady Bay to assist navigation. In heavy seas, however, the lighthouse was obscured by waves and spray. The lighthouse was dismantled and in 1871 the light placed on an obelisk situated above the beach on Flagstaff Hill. This structure is now known as the lower lighthouse
