Green Cape Lighthouse stands as the most southerly of the NSW lights, 25 km south of Eden
      in Boyd NationalPark

Approved in 1873 and funded in 1879, the contract was awarded to A W Aspindall
at 12,936 pounds and work was commenced in June 1881. Problems were encountered immediately
when the site was found to be a bed of white clay
over 6 metres deep. Work stopped in June 1883 when Aspindall went bankrupt, and creditors
finished the job,  with the light first shown on 1 Nov 1883. The
story goes, that Aspindall put some dynamite in his mouth and lit it.

The tower has a bluestone gallery and a small room originally
designed as an oil store is attached to the western side. At the time, the tower was the largest mass concrete structure in NSW, built to an octagonal design on
a square base to make the formwork easier to construct. The 2nd of James
Barnet's major 3 towers of mass concrete and also the tallest, when
finished the foundations were almost 9 metres deep

The Chance Bros 1st order dioptric revolving light flashed every minute
and was visible for 19nm. The mechanism using 345kg lead weights down the
centre of the tower. Originally kerosene produced 100,00 candelas, this
was increased several times over the years. When converted to electricity in 1962
output increased to 1 million Candelas.

Replaced by a solar powered lens on a lattice tower in 1998, the
original lens and mechanism are still in place.
